It’s an experience to say the least

Pump It UpWritten by Michael Hall, Leonardo StellaPerformed by Earl GregoryProduced by Julien Deguines. This is one of those movies that would not do justice seeing at home. You need to be in a packed theatre, feel the waves and rushes of energy from the crowd.

But it’s all worth it

You will laugh, you will look away, your jaw will drop, you will feel uncomfortable. It’s incredible filmmaking, award winning acting and a smashing soundtrack all in one. Huge applause to Demi for taking on such a vulnerable role covering a subject that is rarely discussed.

Just note, this is NOT a movie you want to get high before seeing

Sue is now a star, but it’s tempting to extend her week

Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) was once a great Hollywood star, but she’s in her 50s and hosts a home workout TV show, but she’s a bit old and the creepy producer Harvey (Dennis Quaid) decides he needs a younger star. After Elisabeth is involved in a car accident, information is slipped to her about a new unofficial procedure called a substance that allows a younger self to emerge from your body in the privacy of your apartment. Now there are two, but they are still one and have to switch places every seven days. With natural charm and girlish beauty, Sue (Margaret Qualley) lands Elisabeth’s old job at an open casting call. But she still has to be out of the studio every other week to bring Elisabeth back to life.

No spoilers here, more in the trailer on this page. This breach of the Faustian pact has consequences. Suspension of disbelief about the materials used and the processes involved is easy. The film’s flaws (yes, it has some) are that it’s maybe 10 minutes too long and completely over-the-top with the grand final sequence, but even that is redeemed by paying homage to a lot of horror. The really amazing make-up and prosthetics are put to good use, you’ll be convinced that Sue is emerging from Elisabeth and that other body changes have taken place.

Great acting by Moore, Qualley and Quaid, visual metaphorical references to what’s going on, and close-ups used to deadly effect. It’s not a movie for the faint of heart or the faint of heart, but it’s a great body horror/black comedy/satire. 8/10..
